We booked to do a winery tour today. We were picked up at the caravan park at about 10-30am. There were six of us from here that went but we picked up another eight people on the way. We were a very mixed group, grey nomads, youngsters from Scotland and England and some people from Queensland.
The first winery was Xanadu - we weren't impressed, the amount of wine that we were given to taste barely wet the whistle and the girl who was giving out the samples had no personality.
Then it was off to The Redgate winery - what a difference we thoroughly enjoyed the wines we sampled and were given a more decent amount to taste. There we bought some white port - very nice - even I like it. After the tasting we were treated to a really nice lunch - we tasted kangaroo, bush turkey and emu served with lots of different mixed pickles, some hot and spicy and some very fruity. Jim the bus driver and guide also had a witchetty grub which had been steamed, and he cut it into four pieces and four people on the tour tried it (not us). The bread was pumpkin, tomato and herb with a cheese topping, delicious.
We then went onto the Watershed winery - which is a much bigger winery. The wines here were also very nice.
Well the next place was fantastic - a distillery called the Grove - we tried a Shiraz Port, Chocolate Flavoured Port and a couple of cocktails. All very nice, especially the cocktails. We bought a couple of bottles which we will be able to make the cocktails with. Hopefully we will get the recipe right and they will be as nice. The guy - Steve - that was serving us was a real character he had a really good sense of humour and quick wit. He had us in fits of laughter.
Off to the Chocolate Factory - lots of yummy chocolate. They have chocolate buttons for sampling and we certainly ate quite a few of these.
Then to a cheese place - lots of yummy Margaret River cheese - the Brie was to die for.
Our last stop was the Cowaramup Brewery - by this time we had had enough alcohol so we settled for a hot chocolate and a piece of ginger, date and walnut cake - yummy. We will probably visit the brewery on another day when we will be able to enjoy the beers - after so much wine today beer was the last thing we wanted.
We arrived back at the caravan park at about 5-30pm - it was a long day but most enjoyable - we had a quick dinner then we all sat round a big fire and reminisced about the day we had. All in all a really good day one that we will remember for a long time to come.
Once again the weather was really nice, clear blue skies.
